Heather Brusokas Named Player of the Year; Headlines All-WHAC Softball Honors

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After leading her team to the school's first ever conference title, Davenport senior Heather Brusokas (Glendale, Calif.) was named the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Player of the Year.  Heather was joined on the first team by fellow senior Brianna Carpenter and sophomore Sam Cole as voted upon by the league coaches.

Brusokas carried a batting average of .431 during the regular season, drove in 44 runs, and led the conference with 13 homeruns. Heather ranks in the top 50 of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in 14 stat categories. She becomes the softball program's first ever player of the year.

Joining her on the first team All-WHAC was senior designated player Brianna Carpenter (Irvine, Calif.) and sophomore pitcher Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.).  Carpenter, who also pitched for the Lady Panthers, finished second on the team in many offensive categories including hits (51), doubles (12) and homeruns (12) while leading DU with 51 RBI.

Cole, who also earned first team honors as a freshman, finished the regular season and conference tourney with an overall record of 19-8 while posting a 2.22 ERA.  Sam struck out 146 batters in 182.1 innings pitched and finished with 21 complete games and five shutouts.

Earning Honorable Mention honors were red-shirt sophomore Ashlee Olsen (Rockford, Mich.) and red-shirt senior Cirina Jones (Middleton, Mich.). Also being recognized for their academic efforts by the WHAC were Katie Cornman (Eastpointe, Mich.)Ali Dawson (Galesburg, Mich.), Karlee DespresMorgan Greenfield (Wyoming, Mich.), Cirina Jones and Liz Veltman (Grand Ledge, Mich.).  Each of the student-athletes posted a 3.25 GPA or higher and were of junior or senior status.

Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) was named the Champions of Character recipient. Head coach Ronda Varnesdeel was honored as the WHAC Coach of the Year, which marks the fifth time in her career she has earned that nod after winning four at her alma mater Aquinas College.

Davenport finished the regular season with a 34-15 overall record while claiming their first ever conference title. They then won the tournament title by defeating Madonna University in the championship game 7-4 on a walk-off grand slam by freshman Amber Getty (Wayland, Mich.).
