Babson Park, Fla. – Davenport scored the final six points of the game after Webber International had a 70-68 lead with just over one minute to play to pick up win number 13 on the season 74-70.
Sean Hill hit two free throws in a tie game with 45 seconds to play and
Ryan Dame finished it off with a furious dunk to give DU their third straight win overall and fourth win in the state of Florida this year. DU will return to the court on Wednesday when they resume WHAC play at UM-Dearborn.
Thomas Drew posted a career high 17 points and he was joined in double figures by
JaVontae Ford with 17 and
Dominez Burnett with 16 to lead DU to a big road win at Webber International.
Dawid Czerniawski pulled down a team high seven rebounds while
Ryan Dame was tops with five assists as DU improves to 4-1 in true road games.
Webber International, who has defeated two ranked teams and just lost a close contest to No. 13 Dordt on Friday, came out on fire on both ends of the floor as they stormed out to an 18-9 lead less than 10 minutes into the game. DU then turned to
Thomas Drew to help them claw back into the game and after the junior hit the first of four opening half 3-pointers, it ignited the Panthers to a 16-4 run that covered almost four minutes of game clock. Drew hit three of his deep-range shots in the run and then he combined with
Dominez Burnett to score the last nine DU points of the half putting the Panthers up 34-29 at the break.
The Warriors came out hot again in the opening three minutes of the second half as they responded to an opening bucket by
JaVontae Ford and scored the game's next nine points to take a 38-36 lead. The final 17 minutes then became a back and forth affair as neither team had a lead larger than five with DU holding that cushion (45-40) at the 13:40 mark on a long jumper by
Derek Brooks.
When it looked as if Webber had all of the momentum and a four point lead with 6:20 to play, DU then rattled off11 out of the next 17 points with
Dominez Burnett accounting for six and
JaVontae Ford hitting a big 3-pointer out of a timeout to put DU on top 68-67. A 3-ball by the Warriors on the next possession gave the home team a two-point cushion but then DU scored the final six points to pull out the 74-70 win.
