GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport University's men's and women's tennis teams still have players alive entering the final day of competition at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional hosted by Aquinas College at Orchard Hills. Alyssa Fuentes won both of her singles matches on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the main draw while brothers
Tyler Chambers and
Zac Chambers are also in the final four of the consolation bracket. Both matches will start at 8:30am on Saturday.
After a solid first day of competition on Thursday that saw five singles players and five doubles teams advance to the second day, DU will now have a chance at sending some athletes to the small college national tournament with wins on Saturday.
Tyler Chambers and
Zac Chambers have teamed up to make a run through the consolation bracket into the semifinal round. Both of their wins came on the first day of play on Thursday as the duo defeated Indiana Tech and Marian University. Tomorrow morning, they will face the top seed in the bracket from Huntington University with a chance to play rivals Aquinas who are the other two teams left in the draw.
In singles, Davenport has one player alive in freshman Alyssa Fuentes as she has won both of her matches on Saturday after going 1-0 on the opening day which included a first round bye. In Friday's match, Alyssa downed Aquinas No. 1 Daniella Fonseca 6-1, 6-0 and then posted the identical score in a quarterfinal win over Indiana Wesleyan's Andrea Meyering.
Saturday will be a tough challenge for the freshman as she will face the top overall seed, Rachael Heiniger.
On the men's single side, Davenport freshman
Filip Henrikson, who won both of his opening matches on Thursday, fell in a thrilling three set match with the No. 8 seed David Darling from Spring Arbor 6-0, 4-6, 3-6.
