Men’s Lacrosse Season Preview: Attack

2013 Schedule | 2013 Roster

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The men's lacrosse team opens their first season playing at the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) Division I level this Friday when they head to Central Michigan for their season opener. The Panthers also feature a new man on the sidelines as Chris Gervat begins his first season leading the program. We will take an in-depth look at each position this week beginning with the attack today. Thursday we will highlight the middies and Friday the defense and goalies.

Davenport University has always been one of the top teams at the Division II level of the MCLA highlighted by a national championship in 2011 when they defeated St. Thomas (Minn.) in a game played in Denver, Colo. Chris Gervat takes over the program from Bob Clarkson and the first year head coach will have some experience up front as they make the transition to the D-I level.

Jordan Richtsmeier returns for his final season in a DU uniform as he currently sits in second on the career list for points (278) and goals (122) while he is tops in assists with 156. The coaching staff is excited about the leadership for his final season stating “Jordan is a gifted lacrosse player and overall athlete. Our offensive success lies within his play calling and ability to read defenses.”

Joining Richtsmeier on the attack is junior Dominic Boggiano who finished second on the team in scoring last season with 38 goals and 30 assists. Boggiano, an honorable mention All-CCLA selection a year ago will play the “X” position in 2013 and the coaching staff expects him to use his creativity to give DU another offensive weapon.

While the top two attackers for DU have much experience, the remaining four that the coaching staff will rely on are fairly new to the system including sophomore Parker Horvath and freshman Jimmy Fata, Nicholas Henderson and Matt McCallum.

Horvath got his career off to a solid start in 2012 as he finished eighth on the team in scoring with six goals and four assists. “Parker is a great utility player who can play both attack and midfield, said the coaching staff. He understands the sport really well and we will look for him in key situations in 2013.”

McCallum, who comes to DU from Hamilton, Ontario, is one the coaches expect to make a big impact on the team with his ability to finish in close and his athletic ability is going to allow him to become a great lacrosse player. Fata, a 6'2 attacker from Lansing, Mich. also has great foot speed and is very athletic.

The 2013 attackers will look to get the offense back on track after DU suffered their lowest scoring output during 2012 (19.7 points per game). Head coach Chris Gervat will use his experienced front line along with a great set of midfielders (which we will preview on Thursday) to help get back the offensive form that led DU to a championship just two seasons ago.
