SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – After leading by just a single goal entering the second, Davenport posted two goals, both via the power play to open a 3-0 lead over Marquette and the Panthers cruised home to the 6-2 win. Top-seeded Davenport is now 2-0 in Pool C and will face off against the second seeded Kennesaw State Owls on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. EST. KSU is tied with Marquette with identical 1-1 records after the Owls defeated SUNY-Maritime 4-2 today.
After opening pool play yesterday with a 7-1 win over SUNY-Maritime, the Panthers took the ice on Wednesday against Marquette who had pulled off an upset in their opening game over Kennesaw State. Davenport controlled a majority of the play in the opening twenty minutes and finally got on the board with 6:22 remaining in the period when
Zack Feher took a pass from
Blake Damerow and put it by the MU netminder. The Panthers had a few more opportunities to extend the lead but the Eagle goaltender came up with some big saves as DU led in shots 14-66.
Needing a goal to put a little breathing room between them and the Golden Eagles, Davenport had to fight off three early MU power plays but then got on the board at the 8:17 mark of the second period when
Jordan Steger converted a power play goal on assists from
Branden Burton and
Donald Sund. Then as MU almost had a five on three killed off,
Garrett Garber scored from the point on two perfect passes from Damerow and Feher. That would be all of the scoring for the second period as Davenport held a 37-13 edge in shots after 40 minutes.
The scoring surge continued into the third period when
Jake Otto scored his fourth goal of the tournament just 44 seconds in on assists from Sund and Burton. The lead grew to six when
Dugan Kelly got his first of the tourney but that would be the last of the scoring for DU as Marquette finally got on the board with 9:31 to play and then followed with their second just 17 seconds later. Davenport ended up outshooting Marquette 61-29.
