KENTWOOD, Mich. – Jorge Benitez posted a round of 74 to take home medalist honors at the 2014 WHAC Championships on Thursday afternoon. Davenport, as a team, finished second, just two shots behind the champions from Madonna University and saw its 2013-14 come to an abrupt end. Benitez will now advance to the NAIA National Championships from May 13-16 in Daytona Beach, Fla. at LPGA International.

Needing to come back from six shots down after 36-holes, the men's golf team made up four and fell two shots short in trying to claim their second straight WHAC Tournament championship. Madonna University shot a 307 on the final day compared to Davenport's 303 and took home the team title and automatic berth to the national tournament.

Scoring for the Panthers on the final day were medalist Jorge Benitez and fellow sophomore Warren Grover who each shot rounds of 74. Following those two were Mitchell Wandell with a 76 and Adrian Balbas/Alex Watier with 79's.

Benitez was the low scorer for the tournament and made up a six-shot difference from the first day to win the event by two strokes over Joe Forest of Siena Heights. Jorge fired rounds of 78-72-74 to finish 11 over par on the par-71 course.

Jorge will now advance as an individual to the NAIA National Tournament from May 13-16 in Daytona Beach. Fla. He will be the second individual in school history to advance joining fellow Spaniard Adrian Balbas who went in 2012.
