GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport's Dew Sain (Baseball) and Karlee Despres (Softball) combined for moment No. 6 today as they each provided a big spark for their team this spring by throwing no-hitters. Sain's came on March 24 in a WHAC matchup with Lourdes, while Despres posted a pair of no-no's against No. 14 Lindsey Wilson and McKendree University.

Karlee Despres

No Hitter #1 - COLUMBIA, Ky. – Senior
Karlee Despres threw her fifth no-hitter of her career in DU's first game of the day against No. 14 Lindsey Wilson. Despres allowed only two runners to reach base and recorded 12 strikeouts in route to the 1-0 victory. Davenport defeated St. Catharine's 8-1 in game two to finish out the Campbellsville/Lindsey Wilson Classic and improve to 14-5 on the season.

After walking the first batter of the game, Karlee Despres settled in on the mound and recorded strikeouts from nine of the next twelve batters. With the game still tied 0-0 after five complete innings, Katie Cornman sent her fourth homerun of the season over the centerfield fence in the six to put the Panthers up 1-0.

The one run from Cornman was all Despres needed as she sent down the Blue Raiders in order in both the six and seventh inning to secure the win. The senior pitcher finished with twelve strikeouts on the day and improved to 3-0 on the mound for DU.

No-Hitter #2 BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Davenport softball team finished the first day of the Olivet Nazarene University tournament on a high note after a frustrating opening game.  Karlee Despres recorded her second no-hitter of the season in the team's 6-0 win over McKendree after a 10-3 loss to #14 ONU.  The team will be back in action tomorrow against Judson and Aquinas.

The Panthers came out much more focused in their second game of the day against McKendree University.  While senior pitcher Karlee Despres kept the Bearcats from connecting at the plate, it wasn't until the fourth inning that Davenport got their offense rolling.

Cornman was the first to reach base in the fourth on a single. She eventually scored on a wild pitch by the Bearcats.  Despres would later single and score Paige Sant'Angelo to give DU a 2-0 lead.

Later in the sixth inning with two outs and two runners on base, DU took advantage of additional McKendree miscues to score four runs.  Davenport would then make quick work in the top of the seventh to complete the 6-0 victory.  Despres would sit the final batter down with her 14th strikeout of the game.

Drew Sain

SYLVANIA, Ohio. – The Panther baseball team used dominate pitching to shut down the Gray Wolves of Lourdes today winning both games of the double header.  In game one Jordan Anderson pitched a complete game allowing only one run in the 6-1 DU victory.  Drew Sain then stole the show by throwing only the third no-hitter in DU baseball history to lead the Panthers to a 5-0 victory.

The Panthers came out in game two and scored right away in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, which would be all the offense Drew Sain would need.  Sain came out throwing strikes and letting his defense do their job behind him in order to earn the no-hitter in the nigthcap.  Sain would finish with a line of seven innings pitched, giving up no hits, no runs, walking one and striking out six.

Offensively, the Panther bats were again quiet with only seven hits in the game and scoring five runs.  Chad Cline had a quality game two as he went 2-3, scoring a run and recording three assists to aid Sain.  Derrick Gentile had a pair of RBI in the game, one in the first inning driving in Cam Cooper and the second on a sacrifice fly in the third inning.  Drew Kennedy was productive in the game as well going 1 for 2 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI single in the 4th inning.  Brian Spykerman also had a big RBI single with two outs in the 6th inning.
