Two Tries by Moreland, Ordway Send Panthers to Regional Final

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Hunter Moreland and Danielle Ordway each had two tries, and Hannah Tennant made four successful kicks including a penalty as the Davenport women's rugby team overcame an early deficit to run away with a 27-5 victory in the USA Rugby 15's National Championship regional Saturday. The Panthers return to the campus of Penn State to face Indiana (Pa.) Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with the winner heading to the West Coast for the semifinal.
 
Although the Crimson Hawks struck first with a try, the Panthers trailed throughout the first half until Makala Ferguson broke through the Geneseo line and fed a pass to Ordway for the team's first try with 5:41 left. Tennant missed the conversion as the Panthers went into intermission tied at five points apiece.
 
Davenport captured the lead when Moreland outpaced the Geneseo defense to the try line with 30:03 left in the second half. Tennant made the conversion to bump the Panthers lead to 12-5.
 
Moreland again picked up the pace after some strong scrummaging and ramble 40 meters for her second try of the day with 22:31 left. Tennant made another conversion to extend DU's lead to 19-5. After some back-and-forth play between the two schools, the Crimson Hawks were caught offside and under the orders of team captain Julia Mayer, Tennant struck with a penalty kick to add three points to the lead with 19:01 left. Ordway completed the 27-5 score with her second try, slicing through the Geneseo defense and making a long run with 7:31 left.
