GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the first time in school history, Davenport will be represented by a singles player at the USTA/ITA Small College Nationals as Emily Spiech won the open draw. It was made even better later in the day when she teamed up with fellow sophomore Alyssa Fuentes to win the doubles title. The two will head to the national tournament in Fort Myers, Fla., in early October.

After winning her semifinal match in straight sets over Brittany Horlacher of Marian 6-2, 6-3, Spiech advanced to the finals to meet the sixth seed from Indiana Wesleyan Rachel Bottoroff. Spiech took control with a 7-5 win in the opening set and then closed out the match with a 6-3 win in the second.

Spiech is the first singles player to win the regional tournament and will be the first representative of Davenport at the ITA Small College Nationals since 2011 when Diana Favela and Denisse Favela won the doubles regional.

In doubles, Spiech then paired up with fellow sophomore Alyssa Fuentes to defeat the tandem of Wilson and Mella by the score of 8-3. Spiech and Fuentes rode an early break and then closed out the Wildcats to make it a sweep for DU tennis in the regional.

The USTA/ITA Small College Nationals will take place in Fort Myers, Fla from October 10-13 at the Three Oaks Tennis Center.
