Greg Teliczan is in his eighth year as the head coach of the highly-successful Davenport University women's rugby team, and helped start the program which now competes in the DI level of USA Rugby and the Big Ten.
The 2019-20 season saw the Panthers continue to chip away at a higher level of competition. The team compiled a 8-7 record before the COVID-19 pandemic stopped the season in March. During the fall, DU went 6-3 in 15's winning their final four matches during the regular season. During the 15's nationals, the Panthers went 2-1 with wins over Northern Iowa and Pittsburgh in the consolation matchup. He coached Olivia Ortiz who was named the Davenport Non-Varsity Female Senior Athlete of the Year and represented the U.S. at the Women's Rugby Super Series.
During the 2018-19 campaign, coach Teliczan guided his team back to the USA Rugby 15's College Fall Championship. The team fell in the championship game to Air Force. Davenport had lots of success early in the spring in 7's. The team went 6-0 and won the St. Patty's Day Tournament, and went 6-0 to win the Purdue Trainwreck tournament. In the USA Rugby National 7's, the team were runner-up in the bowl championship.
In 2017-18 the team ran the table in their first season of D1 ball, going a perfect 10-0 and winning the USA Rugby 15's Fall Championship. The team defeated University of Notre Dame 89-24 in the championship game. During 7's, DU won the shield championship at the USA Rugby College 7's.
He led the team to a record of 27-6-1 in the 2016-17 season and captured the USA Rugby 15s national championship and the ACRA Division II 7s national championship in the spring. They also stepped up to Division I at USA Rugby 7s nationals and won the bowl. Danielle Ordway was named an All-American during the season.
Teliczan led the Panthers to a 25-6 overall record in 2015, capped off by winning the ACRA 7s National Championship with a 31-10 victory over Bloomberg University.
In his first season, Teliczan helped guide the 7's team to a record of 15-5, in which they finished 7th at the USA Rugby National Tournament and 3rd at the ACRA National Tournament. In 15's play, the program finished with an overall record of 12-5.
Teliczan came to DU with a wealth of coaching and playing experience, and served as the assistant coach for Sparta High School. From 1995-2008, Greg was a member of the coaching staff of the Grand Rapids Gazelles and served as the head coach from 2000-2008, leading them to the Midwest 7's Championship in 2005. He also spent one season (2007) as an assistant coach for the United States National Team.
From 1978-2008, Teliczan played all around the country and world with 19 of those years spent playing for the GR Gazelles. Greg played professionally in Brisbane, Australia in the summer of 1987 and also was a member of the US National Team in 1993.
Greg is the owner/general contractor for Teliczan Construction and resides in Kent City, Mich.
