9-4 Victory for D2 Team Completes Sweep of Lakers

Oct. 4, 2008

Box Score

Hudsonville, Mich. - The second game of a home and home series with the Lakers was a one-sided affair as the Panthers dominated GVSU 9-4. The win is the second in as many nights for DU over their cross-town rival.

After a thrilling 6-4 homecoming victory the night before, DU traveled to GVSU's home ice and got off to a fast start in route to the 9-4 victory. DU opened the game with three goals in the opening eight minutes of play to make a statement once again as they received goals from Ben Dykstra, Brit Ouellette and Adam Thomas. DU would add a fourth straight goal to open the game about halfway through the opening period when Kevin Doyle received a beautiful combo pass from Bobby Collar and Jeremy Barber on the Panthers powerplay. That goal was short-lived though as GVSU went right down and posted their first goal of the game but DU responded quickly again as Collar intercepted a pass at mid-ice and put one by the Lakers keeper for a short-handed goal and a 5-1 lead for the Panthers.

DU then posted 3 more goals in the second period to only one of the Lakers as they took a commanding 8-2 lead into the final period. Scoring for the Panthers in the second twenty minutes were Ben Dykstra (his second goal of the game), Rick Gadwa and Doyle (also his second goal).

The third period was a back and forth battle as GVSU got two more on the board to only one for the Panthers but their first two period lead was great enough to post the convincing victory.

DU improves to 4-0-0 on the year and drops GVSU to 2-2-0. The Panthers will have to recover quickly from the two games in two days as they will participate in the GVSU Invite this weekend playing four games in four days. DU will host one game on Saturday, October 11 when they welcome Colorado to Patterson Ice Center at 7:15 PM.
