Kentwood, Mich. - The Panthers men's golf team has struggled this spring to find what lifted them to #15 in the country, but after today's dominating performance at the Furniture City Classic, they might be getting hot at the right time. DU posted a 2-over par 578 for 36 holes which was 19 shots clear of their nearest competitor to take the championship for the second straight year.
On a beautiful day at Crystal Springs CC in Kentwood, MI, the Panthers showed what brought them their 2nd consecutive WHAC title in the Fall as they dominated each round on the 6853 yard par 72 layout.
DU shot a 2-under par 286 in the opening 18 holes and followed it up with a 4-over par 292 in the final round. The team score of 578 was 21 shots better than their nearest competitor, the Dutchmen of Hope College. Cornerstone University and GRCC tied for 3rd with a 36-hole score of 624.
Nick Boone (Wyoming, MI) led the charge for the Panthers as he claimed top individual honors after firing a 141 (70-71) and was followed in the individual race by Hope's Matt Lapham (143) and Davenport's Kale Waaso (South Haven, MI) - 145.
The other three scores for DU included Kevin Palmer (Sarnia, ON) - 147, Adam Thomas (Kentwood, MI) - 150 and Dan Moulton (Newberry, MI) - 152.
Davenport will look to keep up the momentum as they will now have the next five days to prepare for the NAIA Region VIII Tournament in Peru, IN.
