Peru, Ind. - The Davenport University Panthers Men's Golf Team has claimed the Region VIII Championship and earned the automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships in May. After taking an 8-shot lead into Day 2, the Panthers shot 301 to take the championship by 17 shots over Marian College.
The Panthers, in only their 6th season of sponsoring golf, earned the championship after playing three solid rounds of golf at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru, IN. Davenport came into the tournament ranked #4 in the latest Region VIII Poll but posted the low round in each of the three rounds.
Kevin Palmer led the way individually and after a solid Day One put him at 148 for the tournament, shot a 75 which was good enough for All-Region Honors. Adam Thomas and Nick Boone also fired 75's today and were closely followed by Freshman Zac Bested who shot a 76. All-Region Honors also went out to Thomas and Bested after finishing in the Top 10 Overall. Kale Waaso's score was thrown out but after a slow first round finished with 76-77 in rounds two and three.
Davenport shot a three-round total of 911 and was followed by Marian (928), Spring Arbor (932) and Huntington (935)
Davenport will now advance to the NAIA National Championships to be held in Plymouth, IN from May 13-16. More information will follow on the website.
