Plymouth, Ind. - In their first ever appearance at the National Championships, the Davenport Men's Golf team showed that it can compete with the best teams in the country. After firing an opening 305 on Day One, the Panthers sit in 14th place out of 28 teams and are only 11 shots out of 3rd place.
Davenport began its first National Tournament round ever at 8:42 on Tuesday morning when Freshman Kale Waaso teed off with Defending National Champions Oklahoma City and Cal-State East Bay. The Panthers struggled early but found their groove in the middle of the round. As the day proceeded the winds continued to pick up and by the time DU was on the last few holes, winds were gusting up to around 30 MPH.
Kevin Palmer led the way for the Panthers on the opening 18-holes of the 72-hole tournament as the Freshman from Sarnia, ON posted a 75 (+3). He was followed in scoring by Nick Boone and Adam Thomas who each fired 76's and the Panthers got their final score from Zac Bested with a round of 78.
On the day, the Panthers were able to post 16 birdies but the double-bogey hurt their chances of being in the Top 10. Johnson and Wales (Fla.) leads the way in the team race as they posted an impressive 284 (-4) overall. Only one other team, Oklahoma Christian was able to go under par as they came in with a 287.
