GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport's hopes of winning its fourth straight game and posting a season sweep of Calvin were dashed early as the Knights jumped out to an early lead and finished the game by scoring three unanswered goals to post a 7-3 win over Davenport.
First period momentum sided heavily with Calvin as the Knights jumped to a 2-0 lead, but the Panthers scored at the 7:10 mark off a face-off deep in the Calvin zone to come within one, but two late penalties thwarted the momentum the Panthers earned back.
The second period opened with an early Calvin penalty, and although the Panthers did not take advantage of the early Knight mistake, DU showed their strength in a five on five when Jordan Steger evened the contest a few minutes later. That would be the lone bright spot in the period for DU as Calvin scored two goals to push their lead back to 4-2 heading into the final period.
In the third period, both teams slowed down in the opening minutes but Davenport seemed to gather themselves during a Calvin penalty that allowed Sam Waldhart to get a puck by the Calvin goaltender to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Knights. Calvin then buckled down and dominated the rest of the game as they scored three unanswered goals in the closing minutes to escape with a 7-3 victory.
The loss brings Davenport to 13-12 overall on the season and ends their three game win streak that started last weekend with a victory over Jackson CC. The Panthers will look to rebound when they travel to Flint, MI on Friday, January 23 to face Kettering.
