LANSING, Mich. - In the D3 season opener, the Panthers got seven goals in the final two periods to defeat host Lansing CC 8-4. The Panthers recieved five points (2 goals, 3 assists) from Justin Welker in the win as they will host LCC on Saturday at Patterson Ice Center.
The opening period of the 2009-10 season for the D3 team was not as planned as the host school Lansing CC came out firing and took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. The lone DU goal was scored by Michael Stedman (Riverside, Ontario) on assists from Justin Welker (Speedway, Ind.) and Taylor Keyworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
After trailing by a single goal entering the second 20-minutes, the Panthers ran off four straight goals beginning at the 16:17 mark when Zack Feher (Livonia, Mich.) scored from Welker on a power play goal.
Matt Nyland (Holland, Mich.) then added his first goal of the year just five minutes later on a pass from Welker and Garrett Russell (Midland, Mich.) to give DU their first lead. Welker would score the third goal of the second period and Chad Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario) finsihed the run with a goal from Brandon Madaj (Newaygo, Mich.).
Leading 5-2 entering the final period, DU gave up an early goal but rebounded quickly and put the game away with three more goals. The first came from Welker which was his second of the night and the goal gave the third year player his fifth point of the night as well.
DU would add goals from Stedman and Russell to round out their scoring as they wound up winning 8-4.
Matt Sekosan (Sterling Heights, Mich.) got the win in net for the Panthers as he finished the night allowing four goals while stopping 24 shots.
DU will host Lansing CC on Saturday night in their home opener beginning with the faceoff at 7:00 PM at Patterson Ice Center.
