ALLENDALE, Mich. - The DU women's tennis team wrapped up their fall season this weekend with two dual match losses to GLIAC foes Ohio Dominican and Grand Valley State. DU finishes 1-4 in their fall dual schedule and will now turn their attention to the spring.
On Saturday, Davenport hosted the Panthers of Ohio Dominican who were making their first appearance as an NCAA D2 opponent after making the the jump from NAIA. ODU got off to a fast start in doubles by taking all three matches by the combined score of 25-11 and cruised to the 8-1 win overall.
The duo of
Stephanie Fortney (Allegan, Mich.) and
Kristi Kuzdal (Grandville, Mich.) played the #3 doubles match down to the wire eventually falling 9-8.
On the singles side, DU was led by their only victory from
Denisse Favela (San Luis Potosi, Mexico). The junior fought off a first set loss (6-4) and came back to win 7-6, 1-0 (13). Fortney also put up a great fight in her singles match as the junior college transfer lost in three sets after winning the first 6-2.
Davenport then traveled to Allendale to take on the Lakers and fell by the score of 9-0.
Again the Lady Panthers fell behind big early in the doubles matches as they dropped all three by scores of 8-1, 8-2, 8-2.
The singles matches were closely contested at the top as #1 singles player
Diane Favela (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) lost 7-6 (5-3) and 6-1. The remainder of the five players for DU were able to only claim 6 sets combined as the Lakers improved to 11-0 on the fall season as a team.
