GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After a solid opening season in 2009-10, the Lady Panthers' tennis team returned to the court today but came out on the losing end of a close 6-3 match to Lake Superior State University at Orchard Hills.

Davenport finished with a respectable 6-8 mark in their inaugural season last year but started the 2010-11 on the losing end on Friday.  DU went 1-2 in doubles matches that were all very close and were just 2-4 in singles matches.

The lone doubles win came from sisters Diane Favela (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) and Denisse Favela (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) as they won the #1 match 8-5.  The other two matches were very close as the Lady Panthers fell 8-7 and 8-5.

The singles matches started off with a win for DU as Denisse Favela improved her career mark to 13-2 overall when her opponent retired due to injury after Favela was in charge 4-1 in the opening set.  Stephanie Fortney (Allegan, Mich.) also picked up a DU win as the junior won her first match as a Panther 6-2, 6-2.

#1 singles Diane Favela (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) battled tough with her opponent but ultimately fell 7-5, 6-4 and Emily Vogl (Wyoming, Mich.) also came close to win but fell 6-4, 6-2.

Davenport will next be in action on Saturday, September 11 when they travel to University of St. Francis (Ind.).
