GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Lady Panthers continued their record breaking season tonight when they defeated #23 Concordia 84-68 to record their second straight WHAC Tournament Championship. DU is now 33-0 on the season and will advance to the NAIA National Tournament next week.
The beginning of the game saw back and forth baskets up until the 11:21 mark in the first half. Up 13-12, Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.) would connect on a three pointer from Kristi Boehm (Kent City, Mich.), with Despres hitting another three five seconds later to extend their lead to seven.
Concordia would hit two consecutive baskets to bring them within four, but that would be as close as the Panthers would let them get. Seniors Jeannie Closson (Parchment, Mich.) and Kallie Benike (Campbellsport, Wis.) would add three straight baskets to bring DU's lead to double digits at 27-17.
With the final minutes of the first half ticking down Leah Sevcik (Kewaunee, Wis.) would connect on a layup from Abby Neff (LaGrange, Ind.), with Despres hitting her third three of the half to send DU into the locker room up 36-22.
Davenport would continue to click on all cylinders in the second half maintaining a 19 point lead seven minutes in. With near perfect free throw shooting, the Panthers would lead by as much as 30 at the 9:02 mark. The Cardinals would pick away at the lead in the final minutes but it would be too little too late as Davenport captured the 16 point 84-68 victory.
Leading the way for the Panthers would be senior Kristi Boehm (Kent City, Mich.) with 14 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals on the night. Benike and Despres would each finish with 13 points on the night, followed by Sevcik with 11 and Neff with 10.
The Lady Panthers would shoot a record 96% from the free throw line along with forcing 26 turnovers on the night to earn their second straight WHAC Tournament Championship title.
The 33-0 Panthers will now head to Sioux City, Iowa to compete in the NAIA National Tournament next week. Davenport will learn their first round opponent on Wednesday when the tournament brackets are announced at 7:00pm.
