Double-OT Thriller Goes to Lady Panthers 78-70 over Cornerstone

Game was first ever double-OT game in school history for Davenport

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In their first double-overtime game in school history, Davenport used the strong play of freshman Abbey Hengesbach to fend off Cornerstone 78-70.  The win, which is the 14th straight for the Lady Panthers, lifts them to 19-2 on the year and 9-0 in league play.

Freshman Abbey Hengesbach posted a career high 25 points and 12 rebounds as she stepped up huge in the two extra frames and late in regulation to help Davenport post their 31st straight win in league play.  Carrie Grubius and Karlee Despres chipped in 14 and 11 points respectively for the Panthers.

After a brief 4-2 lead by Cornerstone (12-9, 5-4 WHAC), Davenport responded with a 19-5 run over the next 8:46 to lead 21-9.  Highlighting the run was a 9-0 spurt started by Karlee Despres and finished with a layup from Hengesbach.  Cornerstone closed to within three, but a late steal and layup from Karli Harris put DU up 30-24 at the break.

The Golden Eagles, who handed the Lady Panthers their last loss in league play during the 2009-10 season, responded in the second half and slowly chipped away at the lead. After fighting back all half, Cornerstone got the game tying bucket with just 15 seconds on the clock and a late three-pointer by DU was off the marks sending it into overtime.

In the second ever overtime game between the two teams, Cornerstone got off to the quick start but in the extra five minutes, only eight points were scored, four by each, sending it into a second extra frame.  It marked the first ever double-OT game for Davenport in their 10-year history.

Abbey Hengesbach then took over in 2OT as the freshman had seven of her career high 25 points including 5-straight to give Davenport a lead they would never relinquish in route to the eight point win.

Post-Game QuotesMike Williams and Abbey Hengesbach

Williams - "I thought we played well we just didn't make shots today like we usually do. We took care of the ball pretty well and had a 1:1 assist to turnover ratio. I thought we had some fouls which gave them points on the free throw line which wasn't good but down the stretch we had some key players come off the bench to give us good spurts which was key in the second half and in both overtimes."

Hengesbach on recovering from poor shooting 1st half - "Coach just stressed to us to continue to work the ball inside allowing the defense to drop in and we would still get our changes from behind the arc. We have great shooters and sometimes you just need to shoot out of a drought."

Hengesbach on focus going into 2-OT - "Making sure we continued to work hard on defense and getting stops to allow our offense to feed off of that energy."
