GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After opening the 2012-13 season at home with a victory, the 12th-ranked Davenport women's basketball team hits the road for the first time Saturday as it takes on NCAA Division II Northern Michigan for a 6 p.m. tipoff. Saturday's matchup can be considered as a final tune-up for the Lady Panthers before their Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference title defense begins next week.

Although head coach Mike Williams had to pencil in players who have never started before in the Lady Panthers 78-66 win over No. 19 Cardinal Stritch last Friday, seniors Karli Harris, Emily Nielsen, Kayla Gross, Leah Sevcik and junior transfer Kendra Cook showed their second-year coach they can get the team on the right track from the start, combining for 60 points in the game. The bench also proved to Williams they can be contributors as Kayleigh VanKeulen and newcomers Alex Law and Brianne Woycehoski combined for 18 points.

While Williams said before the season started that Cardinal Stritch was not going to an easy opponent, Northern Michigan is no different. The Wildcats, which were picked to finish fourth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference North Division preseason poll, open their season Saturday reloading with some new talent to go with their leaders, sophomores Alyssa Colla and Courtney Lemon. In their rookie season, Colla averaged 8.7 points per game while Lemon averaged 7.6 points and 4.1 rebounds.
