HOLLAND, Mich. - On the day in which the Davenport women's tennis team moved up to No. 24 in the latest NAIA Top 25 rankings, the team dropped a heart-breaking 5-4 match to local Hope College. The depth of the Flying Dutch was too much for DU to overcome as they will face Calvin on Friday.
Davenport returned home from Florida and immediately got back to the hard courts as they traveled across town to take on Hope College. Unfortunately, DU suffered their second straight set-back as the Dutch posted a 5-4 win.
DU finished with just a single point on the doubles side as
Diana Favela and
Denisse Favela posted an 8-3 win. Hoped posted convincing wins of 8-0 and 8-3 in the other two matches to carry momentum into the singles play.
At the top of the lineup in singles, DU dominated winning No. 1-3 by dropping only a single set.
Stephanie Fortney finished off No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 performance but the depth of the Dutch lineup was too much as they finished with three wins on No. 4-6 to take the match.
Post-Match Quotes - Patrick Grashorn
"We lost all three doubles last year and we were determined to change that this year. 4 of the 6 singles matches were rematches from last year with the exception of 1 and 5.. Even though we were able to win at one doubles, the rest of the matches saw the same result as last year. They are tough at the bottom."
