EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport claimed two close victories in doubles play today and followed with a sweep of the singles portion to finish with an 8-1 win over Taylor University. The victory lifts the Panthers to 2-1 on the season as they rebounded from their first loss of the season in a big way. DU will return to the court on October 13 when they host Grand Valley State University.
The day started out with three very close matches in the doubles portion of the competition. The Trojans claimed an 8-1 win at #3 doubles but the Panthers pulled out a 9-7 win at #1 behind
Alyssa Fuentes and
Marcie Kooyers and an 8-6 win at #2 behind
Emily Spiech and
Kristi Kuzdal.
Leading 2-1 heading into singles, the Panthers came out strong and finished off the Trojans by winning every set in the six matches.
Alyssa Fuentes and
Marcie Kooyers posted identical 6-1, 6-1 wins while
Emily Spiech won 6-3, 6-0. Closing out the singles at #6 was senior
Katie VanDerLaan who won 6-3, 6-3.
Davenport picked up its second win of the year compared to just one loss and will now have a two week break before meeting NCAA DII Grand Valley State.
