Women's Tennis Opens Season with 9-0 Romp of Cornerstone

Davenport wins all nine matches in straight sets

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport women's tennis team has a brand new look atop the lineup but the Lady Panthers began the 2012-13 season similar to most of last year went as they defeated Cornerstone 9-0 on Friday at Orchard Hills.  The Panthers dropped only 27 sets in the nine matches with none going more than the minimum two.  DU will be in action next weekend as they participate in the ITA Regional.

Davenport lost their top three players from last year's WHAC champion squad, but head coach Patrick Grashorn filled in those spots with some solid newcomers and they got off to a great start on Friday by defeating cross-town foe Cornerstone 9-0.

Starting in doubles with two brand new pairings at #1 and #2, Davenport got a pair of 8-2 wins from the freshman duo of Alyssa Fuentes and Marcie Kooyers as well as Katie VanDerLaan and Angelica Woods.  Freshman Emily Spiech paired with junior Kristi Kuzdal at #2 to finish off a sweep of doubles with an 8-1 win.

Singles play was also dominated by the Panthers with all six posting straight set wins.  Kuzdal had the most convincing win with a 6-1, 6-0 win while Fuentes won 6-0, 6-2.

The team will enter many of their players into the ITA Midwest Regional next weekend here in Grand Rapids.

Post-Match Quotes – Head coach Patrick Grashorn
“The women were excited to finally play some other competition. This was the first official college match for three of the girls and an impressive start to the season. We looked strong at all the doubles positions and singles as well.”
