GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport looked to come out strong against the number one team in conference, Michigan State. The Panthers had a six game win streak coming into the match up, but the Spartans put an end to it as Michigan State came away with a 5-0 victory. Davenport will be back in action on Sunday as they finish up the weekend series with Michigan State. The puck drop for game two is at 10:45 a.m. at Patterson Ice Center.
The game opened with both teams trading scoring opportunities, but Davenport goalie
Lauren Yomantas and the Michigan State goalie kept the game the game scoreless. The Spartans took the lead with 4:30 left in the opening period as Jennifer Polin scored on the breakaway from the near blue line. Just over two minutes later Michigan State scored once again as Elise Plancon scored right off the face-off and Alex Kann was credited with the assist. DU was unable to tally a goal as the Spartans took the 2-0 lead into the locker room.
In the second period, Michigan State used the momentum from their two late first period goals and scored two goals in the first three minutes of the second. Staci Burlingame scored the first goal just 45 seconds into the period as she was able to the puck past Yomantas, and Alex Kann picked up her second assist of the game. Two minutes later Kendall Clary scored on a tic-tac-toe passing play from Burlingame to go up 4-0, and the Spartans led by that score after two periods as Davenport had a few close chances but they were unable to score.
To open the third period,
Chantal Caraher had break from the blue line but she just missed as she rifled the shot of the crossbar. The Panthers had to kill a few Spartan power plays to keep the game at 4-0 halfway through the final stanza. DU got a power play chance, but the Spartans was the team to score as they added a shorthanded goal to take a 5-0 lead. Davenport was unable to tally a goal in the late minutes of the game as they fell 5-0 against Michigan State.
The Panthers will be back in action on Sunday for game two of the series against the Spartans. The puck drop is a 10:45 a.m. at Patterson Ice Center.
Post-Game Notes
The Lady Panthers are now 6-5-0-0 on the season.
Lauren Yomantas made 36 saves in the game and her record on the season is now 4-3-0-0. DU was 0-5 on the power play surrendering two shorthanded goals, while Michigan State was 1-9 on their power play.
