GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – At its most recent meeting, the Davenport University Board of Trustees passed a resolution of support to move forward with steps to develop a football program for the University. Davenport is now in the very early stages of planning and development for this program, with a timeline to be created for important milestones such as the hiring of a head coach, establishment of league relations, student athlete recruitment and finalization of facilities plans. When the timeline has been finalized, Davenport will make further announcements.
"A football program will help us to create an outstanding experience for our students and will support the continued growth of Davenport at its W.A. Lettinga Campus," said Dr. Richard J. Pappas, President of Davenport University. "We obtained feedback from members of our faculty as well as other internal audiences and we are gratified to have their support as we move forward. We look forward to creating a high-quality program in which all of our stakeholders can take great pride."
The process to add a football program to the University's strong athletics department began in the winter of 2012 when the University hired a consultant to conduct a feasibility study. Following the study, Davenport formed a committee to explore every facet of a potential program and the impact it would have on the University.
"The addition of football is a natural progression in the growth of Davenport's successful athletic program and it will be an exciting enhancement to our campus life," said Paul Lowden, Director of Athletics. "It also will further enhance our academic quality, as student athletes at Davenport enjoy a high average GPA level. We are energized to engage in the hard work still to be done to bring football to DU."
The University will make additional announcements when the timeline has been finalized.
