Next DU event: Saturday, December 28, 2013 – vs. Calvin (DU Student Center) – 3 p.m.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It was déjà vu all over again for the fourth-ranked Davenport women's basketball team Friday night. After setting a DU Student Center record for most points (114) scored in a game versus Holy Cross (Ind.), the Panthers went back into the record book and broke it again against the same opponent as they cruised to a 116-58 victory over the Saints in game two of the DU Holiday Tournament.
Linnea Brandholm matched her career-high 17 points for the second straight contest, Shaina Johnson tallied her personal best 14 points all in the first half and freshman Molly Babbs collected a season-high 12 to lead the Panthers to their seventh straight win.
The Saints (3-11) will resume the classic Saturday against Marygrove at 1 p.m., while the Panthers (12-1) will follow against fellow Beltline school Calvin at 3 p.m. The Knights pounded the Mustangs 111-62 earlier in the day.
Alison Bouman and Brittany Johnson also reached double figures on the evening with each posting 10 points. In addition, Bouman paced the team in the rebound department along with fellow senior Alex Merz with six each.
As a team, Davenport shot 54.5 percent from the field while holding Holy Cross to 29.4. DU also took advantage of the charity points with a season-best 24.
Davenport got on the board and never looked back after both teams went scoreless in the first minute of play. Bouman and Shaina Johnson each made a layup and Alex Law hit a pair of free throws to take a 6-0 Davenport lead at the 18-minute mark.
The Panthers went on a 26-3 run within the final five minutes of the opening period to head into the locker room leading 62-25, the most points Davenport has scored in the opening half this season.
While the Panthers shot 50 percent in field goal range, Shaina Johnson led the way with the 14 points and not far behind her were Brandholm with 12 and Bouman with 10. Brandholm also led the Panthers with a pair of 3-pointers in the first half.
It did not take long for Brandholm to match her career-best in the second half. With 12 points at intermission, Brandholm hit a 3-point shot nine seconds into the latter period and used a layup at the 17:29 mark to complete her 17-point day.
Holy Cross had a difficult time trying to find a momentum. The largest run the Saints established was 6-0 midway through the first half.
