GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After posting her career-best 17 points in the last two games, Linnea Brandholm matched her record again and added two more Saturday to set a new mark as she and the fourth-ranked Davenport women's basketball team used a 30-2 run midway through the contest to beat three-time defending Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champions Calvin 80-50 on the second and final day of the DU Holiday Classic.
Despite only tallying four points at intermission, Brittany Johnson came out of the locker room with a different look as she started the period with three consecutive layups and added two more jumpers late in the half to finish with 14 points. Kia Frazier also reached double figures with 11 points.
Tiesha Stokes brought down six rebounds to pace the Panthers (13-1), Alison Bouman had five and five others each collected four. Stokes also had five of the Panthers 18 steals in the game while Kayleigh VanKeulen set a new personal best of five assists, breaking the previous mark of four set on four different occasions throughout her three-year career.
Davenport started out with a 10-1 run in the first five minutes of the contest. Although it never gained the lead, Calvin turned the tables and used an 11-4 run to cut the Panthers lead to 14-12 at 11:23. After the Knights connected a 3-pointer at 7:11 to bring the deficit down to one, they couldn't take the lead after Bouman collected five points and Kristina Cousins added a layup in the span of three minutes.
After using an 8-0 momentum within the final three minutes to take a 39-26 at halftime, DU came out of the locker room picking up where they left off and held the Knights to only a pair of free throws, exploding to a 22-2 run in the span of 6:56.
The Panthers defense also improved in the second half as the Knights were held to 29.6 percent from the field in the second half after going 36.7 in the first.
The Panthers complete their non-conference slate with a perfect 7-0 record and will finish the regular-season in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play starting Saturday at Aquinas at 1 p.m. The Beltline rivals are currently in a three-way tie (the other being Indiana Tech) for first place in the standing with 6-1 records.
Post-Match Notes
