ADRIAN, Mich. – For the second straight year at Siena Heights, the Davenport Women's Basketball team dug themselves a big deficit only to come out of it with a win yet again. DU used a 16-0 run late in the second half and closed out the game scoring 20 of the final 26 points to claim a 55-51 victory over the Saints. The No. 4 ranked Lady Panthers improve to 9-1 on the season and 4-1 in WHAC play as they will return to action at home on Saturday vs. Lawrence Tech at 1 p.m.
Four different players finished with nine points as Davenport rallied from a late 11 points deficit to come back and win 55-51 at Siena Heights. Linnea Brandholm had a team leading six rebounds to go along with her nine points while Kia Frazier dished out a game high five assists.
Coming off a 52% shooting night against St. Francis (Ill.) on Saturday, the Lady Panthers struggled to find their shooting touch early as they connected on only two of their first 17 looks. In that span though, the defense held tough as they limited the Saints to only a 14-5 lead.
After Alex Law broke the 10:04 scoring drought, Siena Heights increased the margin to 11 before DU rattled off five in a row to bring the margin down to just six but that would be as close as they would get as the Saints scored 12 of the last 18 points of the half to lead 31-19.
The opening 10 minutes of the second half did not see much change in terms of the lead but DU got within seven after a three-pointer from Alex Law only to see the Saints increase it back to 11 (46-35 with 8:32 to play.
That is when the run started as Shaina Johnson hit an open jumper to open it with five more points from Tiesha Stokes, Kayleigh VanKeulen and Alison Bouman to get DU within three. Then on back to back possessions, Linnea Brandholm hit deep 3-pointers to give the Panthers a 49-46 lead which was their first lead since 5-4 the first two minutes of the game. The lead grew to as many as six after three straight points from Alex Law and DU closed it out with the 55-51 victory.
Davenport recovered from the cold start to finish the night 21-55 (38.2%) from the field and held SHU to just 34.5% (20-58). DU had a hot hand from behind the arc as they finished 8-19 (42.1%).
Post-Game Notes
The deficit of the half was the largest of the season for DU and third time in their 10 games they have been trailing at the break (Cornerstone and Cardinal Stritch)…The 12 point halftime deficit is the first time DU has trailed at half by more than 10 since November 11, 2011 at Olivet Nazarene (10)…The victory at Siena Heights is the second straight time DU had trailed at the break and came back to win by four (won 70-66 last year)…Not one player finished in double-figures as four players had nine points
