ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – After having to play two overtime periods 24 hours ago, the Davenport women's soccer team had to work extra time again. Both teams went back-and-forth with possession for a majority of regulation but an own goal off a corner kick allowed No. 5 Westmont (Calif.) to take a 1-0 win and advance to the NAIA National Championship semifinal Wednesday afternoon.
The Panthers historical 2013 season comes to an end, finishing with a very impressive 19-3-1 record and two straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championships.
Although the Warriors (17-1-4) edged DU in shots (15-10) and corner kicks (7-2), they were unable to break a solid Panther defensive line led by goalkeeper
Michelle Marcus and seniors
Laken Duchar-Clark and
Emily Nielsen.
The first half saw a battle for possession as both teams only recorded five shots. Davenport had two close opportunities midway through the period.
Letesha Cannonier was winning a one-on-one battle with a Westmont defender and took a shot from about 25 yards that went wide. Another chance was with 34 minutes left,
Lizzie Paul took a corner kick to
Paige Eli but the sophomore's header went wide right.
Both teams would continue to trade off possession for a majority of the second half until Westmont began to start knocking on the door. The Warriors thought they had a chance to break the ice in the 82
nd minute with a shot about 20 yards out but Marcus had to reach high to knock the ball over the crossbar to keep the Panthers alive.
The Warriors jumped right on the attack from the start of the overtime period. They had back-to-back corner kick opportunities one minute into the period and the Panthers defense was trying to head it out of bounds on the second try but accidentally went into the net.
Post-Match NotesDavenport loses the inaugural meeting with Westmont (Calif.)…It is the first time Davenport has been shut out since the WHAC Tournament final, when it and Northwestern Ohio went scoreless and had to determine the champion in a shootout…
Michelle Marcus' six saves made today is the most since she matched that number in the WHAC Tournament final…It is the first time this season the Panthers have been outshot in back-to-back matches.
