Score: No. 4 Davenport 87, Lawrence Tech 50
Records: DU (10-1, 5-1 WHAC), LTU (4-5, 3-3 WHAC)
Next DU event: Saturday, December 14, 2013 – at Madonna (Livonia, Mich.) – 1 p.m.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Brittany Johnson had 14 points and a season-high 12 assists for her first double-double and was one helper short from tying a seven year old school record, but she helped pilot the fourth-ranked Davenport women's basketball team to a 87-50 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference win over Lawrence Tech Saturday afternoon. The Panthers, winner of five straight, improve to 10-1 overall and 5-1 in the WHAC.
Johnson, who needed one assist to tie Jeanette Woodberry's 13 assists at Webber International in 2006, is also one of four Panthers to reach double figures in points on the afternoon, including fellow starters Tiesha Stokes (13 points) and Alison Bouman (12). Alex Law matched Johnson's 14 points off the bench for Davenport, with nine points coming from 3-point land.
Stokes also finished the day with seven rebounds, with four brought down offensive.
Lawrence Tech's (4-5, 3-3 WHAC) only lead came 11 seconds into the game on a jumper by Jazmine Brown. The lead disappeared when back-to-back put backs by Bouman followed by a layup by Stokes gave DU a 6-2 lead with 17:32 left.
The combination of Stokes, Brittany Johnson, Bouman and Linnea Brandholm would ignite a 17-3 run in the span of four minutes to take a 45-22 lead with 3:44 left.
Davenport went into the locker room leading 52-30. Stokes led the way with 13 points and five rebounds while Brittany Johnson had 11 points and had already set a new season-best in assists with seven. The Panthers also shot 57 percent from the field, 33 from beyond the arc.
Both teams did not prevent any kind of momentum in the second half. Brittany Johnson and Law would go back-to-back in 3-pointers for a 6-0 run to make it the largest momentum in the second half.
The Panthers will have the weekdays to prepare for a road matchup with Madonna. The final WHAC contest in 2013 will take place Saturday at 1 p.m.
Post-Match Notes
Davenport improves to a perfect 3-0 against Lawrence Tech…The Panthers' .556 shooting percentage is the second highest on the year…The 12 assists Brittany Johnson made is the second most since Karli Harris did it twice last season, the last being Feb. 16, 2012 at Indiana Tech.
