KISSIMEE, Fla. - Davenport picked up an extra match while down on their spring break trip in Florida and it happened to be against one of the top teams in the country as Brenau University (Ga.) went up against the Lady Panthers late Wednesday night. Brenau posted a 9-0 win but head coach
Patrick Grashorn was glad for the opportunity to face one of the top teams in the NAIA.
Davenport, which was riding a 7-match winning streak, took on probably the toughest team they will face all season on Wednesday as Brenau posted a 9-0 win over the Lady Panthers.
Brenau, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA Top-25 poll, went up 3-0 after doubles but DU put up a fight at the top with
Emily Spiech and
Alyssa Fuentes losing 8-5 and at No. 3 fell 8-2.
Singles play brought some more tight matches but DU could not muster enough magic to get a point as Brenau took all six matches. DU fell in three sets at No. 3 (
Kristi Kuzdal) and in two other close ones at No. 2 (
Emily Spiech - 6-4, 6-4) and No. 6
Katie VanDerLaan (6-3, 7-5).
DU falls to 9-4 on the season as they now turn their attention to NCAA DI Mount St. Mary's (Md.) on Friday to close out their spring break trip.
