GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport held a 2-1 lead heading into the singles matches but host Calvin had just enough depth to come from behind and post a 5-4 win over the Panthers on Friday night. The loss, which is the third straight for DU, drops them to 9-6 on the year as they will be in action next weekend when they travel to Ohio for a match with Walsh before opening WHAC play on Saturday at Northwestern Ohio.
Davenport continues to play against some of the top competition in preparation for the WHAC schedule upcoming and cross-town foe Calvin came out with a come from behind win on Friday over the Panthers.
DU got a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at No. 1 (
Emily Spiech and
Alyssa Fuentes) and No. 2 (
Kristi Kuzdal and
Marcie Kooyers). Calvin grabbed an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
Playing without Fuentes in singles who is battling an ankle injury hurt DU as they were outscored 4-1 to drop the match 5-4. Spiech posted a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 and Kuzdal a thrilling three-set 5-7, 6-3, 7-7 (0) win to get DU within one point of clinching the match.
Unfortunately the Knights had just a little too much depth as they pulled out matches 3-6 including two in the third set.
Davenport is now 9-6 on the year and will head to Walsh (Ohio) on Friday and then Northwestern Ohio on Saturday to start league action.
