FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Davenport picked up a 7-2 win over host Indiana Tech on Friday afternoon and the victory clinches the Panthers' second straight outright Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship. DU took a 3-0 lead into singles play and posted their fourth straight win in the conference regular season to sweep the WHAC for the second straight season. DU will now turn their attention to a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday against No. 21 Marian (Ind.) and St. Francis (Ind.).
Davenport clinched at least a share last week with a win over Aquinas but the team wanted no part in sharing it as they walked away with a 7-2 win on the road at Indiana Tech on Friday afternoon. DU won all three doubles matches by a combined 24-10 score with the Panthers posting identical 8-2 wins at No. 1 (
Emily Spiech and
Alyssa Fuentes) and No. 3 (
Kristi Kuzdal and
Katie VanDerLaan).
Heading into singles needing only two match wins, DU got four from No. 2 (Fuentes - 6-0, 6-0), No. 4 -
Marcie Kooyers - 6-1, 6-1, No. 5 -
Angelica Woods; 6-0, 6-1 and No. 6 (VanDerLaan - 6-1, 6-1)
The Panthers will stay in Indiana for a pair of non-conference matches against Crossleague foes Marian (ranked No. 21 in the NAIA) and the University of St. Francis on Saturday.
