INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Davenport came within one point of pulling a Top-25 upset on Saturday morning but the host Marian Knights proved to be one match tougher Davenport fell 5-4. The Knights came into the match ranked No. 21 in the latest NAIA Top-25 poll while the Panthers are receiving votes. The setback ends a four-match winning streak for DU as they now turn their focus to a pair of home matches to end the regular season against Spring Arbor and Huntington.
Davenport stayed in the state of Indiana after sewing up the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship on Friday to take on nationally ranked Marian University. After falling behind 2-1 in doubles, DU tried to rally but came up one match short in dropping their second match of the year 5-4 to a ranked opponent from the Crossroads League.
Emily Spiech and
Alyssa Fuentes continued their strong play in doubles as they won their No. 1 match 9-7. The host Knights took the other two for a 2-1 lead.
The first four singles matches that finished were split with DU picking up wins at No. 2 (Fuentes - 6-1, 6-2) and No. 6 (
Katie VanDerLaan - 7-5, 6-0) while the Panthers fell at No. 4 and No. 5. The last two matches on the courts both headed to third sets but the Panthers could only pull out one win as Spiech posted a 6-3, 6-7 (8), 6-0 win at No.1.
DU will host Spring Arbor and Huntington this week as they conclude their regular season.
