GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport jumped out to a 3-0 lead in doubles and then won four of the six singles matches to defeat visiting Spring Arbor on Tuesday afternoon at the Farmers Athletic Complex. The win lifts Davenport to 16-9 on the season as they will host Huntington University in another non-conference match on Friday to end their regular season.
The Panthers are preparing for post-season play and today they got a nice test from a solid Spring Arbor program with DU coming out on top 7-2. Davenport took a 3-0 lead after doubles with an 8-2 win at No. 1 (
Emily Spiech and
Alyssa Fuentes), an 8-4 win at No. 2 (
Marcie Kooyers and
Angelica Woods) and an 8-3 win at No. 3 (
Kristi Kuzdal and
Katie VanDerLaan).
The play continued into singles with DU posting wins in four of the six matches. Fuentes, playing at No. 1 singles for the first time since late February, continued her solid play winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Spiech dominated at No. 2 winning 6-1, 6-0 while Kuzdal was also successful in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. The match was finished off with a convincing win from
Angelica Woods at No. 5, 6-1, 6-1.
Davenport will conclude their regular season with another non-conference match on Friday when they welcome in Huntington University for a 4pm match.
