2013 Davenport Invitational Homepage
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After a great performance in the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional last weekend, the women's tennis team returns to their home courts once again this weekend as they host the first ever Davenport Invitational. Other teams participating will include Cornerstone, Aquinas and Alma. The Panthers will then head out to Allendale for a matchup on Sunday with the Lakers of Grand Valley State.
Head coach Patrick Grashorn's thoughts
Your team is coming off a very successful showing at the USTA/ITA's - how will they carry that momentum into this weekend
It was a great tournament for the women's team. The confidence of most of the girls is extremely high right now and that will be important going into this weekend's matches, especially GVSU who will be one of the best teams we face all year.
How unique will it be to start this tournament with all 3 Grand Rapids schools as well as Alma?
Since my days as a player in the area there has always been a "City Tournament" for the men but no one has ever started one for the women. It was my goal this year with the new facility to get that rolling as a fall event. Hopefully it will be something we can continue to host and grow to include the rest of the Grand Rapids schools.
Which players have been a surprise early on this season...or which players have made an immediate impact on the lineup?
The biggest impact on the lineup so far has come from Puck Luttikhuis. She's playing good tennis and is tough to beat if her forehand is on. I thought we were deep last year but having Puck come in pushes everyone below her down a spot making us even deeper. The same can be said for Montserrat Elizondo.
