FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Davenport women's basketball team used a strong effort on the defensive end of the floor today to pick up their eleventh straight win with a 73-53 victory over Indiana Tech. The win lifts DU to 16-1 overall and 9-1 in league action as they will resume conference play next Wednesday when they welcome Marygrove to the Student Center for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
Tiesha Stokes scored a career high 28 points and posted her fourth double-double of the season with 11 rebounds as Davenport picked up a crucial road victory in conference play on Saturday. Alison Bouman and Alex Law each finished in double-figures with 15 and 12 points respectively while the DU defense held the host Warriors to 22 points below their season average in the victory.
Looking to extend their winning streak to 11 games, the team got off to a fast start and after just 8:18 of play led the Warriors 20-6 after Alex Law buried a three-pointer from long range. The scoring barrage would continue from the sharpshooter as she and fellow sophomore would combined for 24 of Davenport's 45 first half points helping the Panthers to a 45-22 lead at the break.
Davenport forced the home Warriors into 11 first half turnovers which directly led to 13 points and the Panthers held a commanding 30-19 edge on the glass in the first 20 minutes of play.
The No. 3 ranked Panthers then opened the second half with a jumper from Brittany Johnson and a free-throw to increase the margin to its largest of the game at 26 points but the Warriors used a 21-10 run over the next 10 minutes to get within 15 at 58-43. A large part of the scoring came from behind the arc as IT hit four triples in the run.
With the momentum clearly on the Warriors' side, head coach Mike Williams utilized a pair of timeouts and after the short breaks, Davenport quickly used an 8-0 run to up the lead back to the same margin at halftime (22) and the Panthers closed out the game with a …win
Davenport finished 29-68 (42.6%)from the field while limiting the Warriors to a measly 35.7 % (20-56). Indiana Tech finished with 20 turnovers while the Panthers held a 47-35 edge on the glass.
