RedHawks Hold off Women's Hockey's Late Comeback to Sweep CCWHA Series

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport women's hockey team broke the ice 51 seconds into the game and tried to come back from a two-goal deficit late in the third period but came up short as Miami (Ohio) held on to beat the Panthers 3-2 and sweep the Central Collegiate Women's Hockey Association series Saturday afternoon. Lexie Boydston net the first goal of the game for Davenport and Darian Adams cut the deficit to one midway through the third period.

After Kerri Rozeboom's shot was deflected, Caitlin Harrison went for the rebound and found Boydston for the bar down shot goal 51 seconds into the contest.

Davenport went into the first intermission leading 1-0 but the RedHawks did all the damage in the second period. They tied the game at 5:42 and took the lead with a power play goal 2:12 later. Miami (Ohio) collected the insurance goal at 11:04.

Coming back from the second intermission trailing 3-1, the Panthers got the one-goal deficit back while on the power play at 8:39. After receiving a pass from Melissa Cresse, Chantal Caraher fired a shot that dropped right on the goal line where Adams was there to slap it into the net.

The Panthers were awarded a power play opportunity with 1:41 left in regulation after too many RedHawks were on the ice. Despite having an extra player, Davenport could not find the equalizer.

Miami (Ohio) went 1-for-5 on the power play while Davenport went 1-for-8.

Davenport's season-ending eight-game road trip shifts from Ohio to Illinois next weekend as it heads to Robert Morris for a two-game set. The Panthers and Eagles open the series Friday at 8:50 p.m.

Post-Game Notes
Davenport falls to 0-4 all-time against Miami (Ohio)…The Panthers scored their first power play goal in six games, with the last being Nov. 16 against Vermont.

Post-Game Quote – Head Coach Tom Hofman
"Our team consistently tries to get a good start by scoring first. We did that tonight when Lexie scored 51 seconds in. We felt like we came out and set the tone tonight. For the first time this year we won the first and third periods, and also scored on the power play. The hard work the ladies are putting forth every day in practice is paying off. Coach Lauren (Iavasile) and I keep asking the team to play with confidence, to believe in themselves and the systems we've implemented. The team played with a ton of confidence today versus the best team in the country. We are a very proud coaching staff tonight."
