D2 Hockey Rolls Past Ferris State Behind Burton’s Hat Trick

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport D2 hockey team was back on the ice for the first time since they won all four of their games at the ACHA Showcase last weekend. Branden Burton tallied a hat trick and also chipped in with one assist as Davenport rolled past Ferris State with an 11-2 win. The Panthers and Bulldogs will conclude their weekend home-and-home series on Saturday at 4:50 p.m. at Patterson Ice Center for the Panthers home opener.
 
Ferris State got on the board first as they scored just 2:14 into the game, but Davenport got on the board ten minutes later as Jake Otto got the scoring started for DU. Donald Sund scored his first goal of the game to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead, and just 17 seconds later Otto scored his second goal of the period to give Davenport a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
 
In the second period, Davenport started to take over the game offensively scoring five goals in the period. Branden Burton scored the first of his three goals in the early going of the second period. Dugan Kelly, Bailey Rietman and Daniel Swink followed up with three more goals in a span of 3:07. Sund closed out the scoring in the second period as DU led 8-1 after two periods.
 
Burton started the scoring again in the third period with his second goal of the game, and Swink also tallied his second goal of the game to give DU a 10-1 lead with 14 minutes left in regulation. Burton completed his hat trick with 8:01 left in the third period to finish the scoring for Davenport. Ferris State scored one more goal in the third period, but Andrew Habasevich was able to grab his second win on the year as the Panthers went onto win the game 11-2.
 
The Panthers will host Ferris State at Patterson Ice Center on Saturday at 4:50 p.m. for their home opener to finish off the home-and-home series.
