GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 4 Davenport men's soccer team saw themselves trailing for the second consecutive road match. Despite allowing the early goal, the Panthers were able rally back with goals from
Chase Burgess and
Lawrence Murray to complete a 2-1 victory over crosstown rival Cornerstone Wednesday and keep Davenport in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference title hunt.
The Panthers (13-2-0, 6-1-0 WHAC) will have a chance to gain control of the league standings as their next two opponents are contending for the crown. The travel to Madonna for a rare Friday matchup at 3 p.m. before hosting first-place Northwestern Ohio Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Cornerstone (4-10-1, 2-5-1 WHAC) drew first blood of the rivalry in the 17
th minute when Tristan Esprit bent a free kick outside the penalty area to the bottom right of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
The lead did not last very long as Davenport answered back on Burgess' goal in the 29
th minute. Burgess took control of a loose ball and struck inside the box.
After Cornerstone was forced to play a man down due to a red card in the 60
th minute, Davenport's go-ahead goal came eight minute later when Murray knocked a loose ball in off a corner kick.
Davenport had showed to be aggressive on the attack, outshooting the Golden Eagles 14-3 while having all seven corner kick opportunities in the match.
Despite allowing the one goal,
Aaron Orban had pretty much a quiet night between the posts with not needing to make any saves.
