GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport D2 hockey team returned home on Friday night for a rare home game against Grand Valley State. The Panthers never trailed in the game as they scored two quick goals in the first period, but the Lakers came back twice the game to force a 4-4 tie. Davenport will now travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. to face Indiana Tech at 9 p.m.
Davenport came out fast in the first period as
Zachary Bodziak scored the first goal of the game just 37 seconds into the game. Just a few moments later,
Branden Burton came right back down to give Davenport a two goal just 3:12 into the first period on tipped shot from the point. Grand Valley State started to settle in after two quick goals from the Panthers.
Grand Valley finally got onto the scoreboard with 1:46 left in the first period just after a Davenport penalty expired. After the first period Davenport was able to hang onto to a 2-1 lead.
The Lakers looked to rebound after a slow start in the first and Grand Valley was able to tie the game at two with 16:13 left in the second period.
Chris McRae put the Panthers up late in the second period after he knocked home a rebound to give DU a 3-2 lead heading into the second intermission.
In the third period,
Donald Sund opened up the scoring in the period on an unassisted goal to increase the Davenport lead to two goals. Grand Valley State then cut the lead in half on a goal with 6:53 left in regulation. The Lakers then tied the game up with 1:26 left in the third period to force overtime. Neither team was able to score in overtime as the game finished in a 4-4 tie.
The Panthers will head to travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. on Saturday to face ACHA D3 squad Indiana Tech. Puck drop is scheduled at 9 p.m.
