DELRAY BEACH, Fla. –
Jacob Love's first of a two-goal afternoon in the fourth minute was all that was needed for the No. 7 Davenport men's soccer team to run away No. 6 Grand View (Iowa) 4-0 in the quarterfinal round of the NAIA National Championship at Hilltopper Stadium Wednesday.
Third-year head coach
Chris Hughes and the Panthers (20-3-1), who already have gone where the program has never gone before, will enjoy a well-deserved day off Thursday and will face Marymount (Calif.) in the semifinal Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Mariners edged Mobile (Ala.) 2-1 following the Panthers match.
In addition to fellow Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference member Northwestern Ohio's win earlier in the day, the Panthers victory made it the thirdstraight season two teams from the same league reached the national championship semifinal. The Southern States Athletic Conference had two represented in the final the last two seasons.
It also marks the first time in the WHAC's history in any sport that two teams reach the final four.
Love's first goal came off a pass from Dzenan Catic to the left side, he would dribble to the end line before firing a shot to the right post. His second happened in the 22
nd minute when he broke away from midfield and his shot deflected off keeper Sebastian Santos and into the goal.
TJ Ifatoroti would add more breathing room with a goal in the 71
st minute before helping
Joan Nievas put the match out of the Vikings reach four minutes later.
Davenport held a 10-7 overall shooting advantage, 5-2 on goal. Both teams had four corner kick opportunities.
