FLINT, Mich. – The Davenport women's hockey team closed the book on their inaugural season in their final game of the CCWHA Tournament as they lost 1-0 to Michigan State in the final game of the round robin portion of the tournament. Victoria Smishek only allowed one Spartan goal in the game as the Lady Panthers finished the season with a 7-22-0-0 record on the season. DU will now wait for the national tournament selection announcement on Sunday to see if they make the national tournament.
 
The Lady Panthers and Spartans went back and forth in the opening period with both goaltenders coming up with some big saves, and neither team could break through with an early first period goal as the game was still scoreless heading into the first intermission.
 
In the second period, Michigan State was finally able to break the ice and score the first goal of the game early in the period to take the 1-0 lead. After the first Spartan goal Victoria Smishek stood tall in net to keep the game at 1-0 after two periods of play.
 
The Lady Panthers tried to make a comeback in the third period, but the Michigan State net minder continued to hold onto her shutout. Davenport could not tack on a goal late in the period as Michigan State was able to hang on to the 1-0 win.
 
Davenport finished fourth in Pool B in the CCWHA tournament, while Michigan State was able to grab the second place and advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament.
 
The Lady Panthers will now wait to see if they are selected to the national tournament. The eight teams that will be selected to the national tournament in Newark, Del., will be announced on Sunday.
