LYNCHBURG, Va. –
Megan DeVries's first goal of the season on the power play in the opening period helped the Davenport women's hockey team tie the game one apiece but Liberty regained the lead nearly two minutes later and added four more in the second period to take game one 7-1 in a late night battle Friday night. The Panthers fall to 7-17-0 overall while the Lady Flames improve to 13-8-4 on the year. Both teams will have short rest as they return to LaHaye Ice Center for game two Saturday at 1 p.m.
After Davenport's breakaway shot attempt was stopped by the Lady Flames netminder at the 9:30 mark, Liberty quickly moved the puck into the Panthers zone and broke the ice 30 seconds later.
Liberty's lead did not lost long as the Panthers took advantage of a power play opportunity. It was all the assistant captains as
Caitlin Harrison found an uncovered DeVries near the edge of the neutral zone whose unanswered shot went into the back of the net with 6:29 left. The Lady Flames would regain the lead at 4:50 and went into the locker room for first intermission leading 2-1.
Despite Davenport's success in killing the 21 seconds remaining of a penalty at the start of the middle period, the Lady Flames surrounded the Panthers goal crease and scored its third goal 30 seconds in.
Although Liberty added three more goals in the second to take a 6-1 lead, the Panthers had several scoring opportunities. With 16:46 left,
Chantal Caraher used her speed to move the puck across the ice but her backhand shot was deflected off the goaltender. The freshman broke away from the pack again with 4:26 left but her shot was caught.
Kerri Rozeboom took a crack at the breakaway attempt near the end of the second period but her backhand shot on the right side was blocked.
The Lady Flames added its seventh goal at the 13:59 mark of the third period.
