SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Alex Law began the Davenport women's basketball team's 10th appearance in the NAIA National Tournament with 18 points but it was all defense as the second-ranked and No. 1 seeded Panthers forced 28 turnovers, 19 in the first half, to roll past Ave Maria (Fla.) 94-40 Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers will have a day off Thursday and will play the winner of the Purdue Calumet-Oregon Tech contest Friday at 4:30 p.m. EDT.
Law made all of her 18 points from the 3-point line to match her career best for the fourth time. Alison Bouman had 12 points and led the effort on the boards by bringing down eight of DU's 52. Tiesha Stokes and Linnea Brandholm each had 11 points with Brandholm connecting three 3-pointers.
While shooting 46.5 (19-for-38) from the field, Davenport set a new mark in 3-pointers this season with 14. On the other side of the court, the Gyrenes went 13-of-54 (24.1 percent).
The Panthers exploded right from the start against the Gyrenes, starting out with a 12-0 lead and holding them scoreless until the 15:13 mark while adding 12 in their favor.
Davenport led by as many as 45 in the first half with 1:13 left and went into the locker room with a 59-18 lead. Alex Law led the effort making all five of her baskets from beyond the arc for 15 points and was the only Panther in double figures. The Panthers combined to shoot 50 percent (19-for-38) from the field while holding the Gyrenes to 18.5 (5-for-27).
