ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Davenport women's rugby team pulled the entire curtain on its inaugural season with a split in the American Collegiate Rugby Association's 7s National Championships to finish third in the tournament Sunday. The Panthers offense arrived at Grand Valley State flat as they were handed a 29-5 defeat to Stonehill College out of Massachusetts in the semifinal contest but awoke two hours later in their 22-10 win over Merrimack in the bronze match.
Davenport finishes the 7s season with a 15-5 overall record.
The ACRA also selected
Hannah Tennant and
Makala Ferguson to its all-tournament team. Both Panthers played the entire playoff with Tennant making 14 of 19 conversions, including one today. The two also tallied a try in day one.
Davenport was not only unable to move the ball out of their zone but had a few miscues that allowed Stonehill to take advantage of. After Stonehill's tallied two tries early in the first half, the Panthers appeared to have broken through the Skyhawks' front line when
Karah Warriner sneaked through it but was caught at the midfield line. A lose ball afterward allowed the Skyhawks to take a 15-0 lead at halftime.
With the final seconds remaining in game one, Kaylani Rubley recorded the only try for the Panthers by running down the left flank.
In their second matchup against Merrimack in 24 hours, the Panthers struck early with three tries by Rubley, Warriner and
Hunter Moreland. Tennant added a conversion to the run to take a 17-0 lead into intermission.
Julia Mayer added one more try at the start of the latter half to take a 22-0 lead, but the Warriors attempted a late rally but was held to 10 points by the Panthers defense.
