No. 7 Women’s Soccer Strikes Early Again in Win Over Goshen

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – For the fourth time in five matches a member of Davenport's seventh-ranked women's soccer team found the back of the net multiple times. Lindsay Furness scored two goals, Natalie McHale added one to add on to her scoring streak to five matches, and the Panthers held on to preserve a 4-0 win over Goshen Wednesday evening.

Davenport (5-0) now begins a season-most five-match road trip starting with Saint Xavier in Chicago Tuesday at 6 p.m. EDT. It will not return to the friendly confines of the Turf Field until Oct. 4 against Marygrove.

Tam Grzybowski and Shameeka Fishley have been in battle for the top spot in Davenport's assist column during the young season. Although Fishley helped out Furness' second goal, Grzybowski tallied two to catch up to Fishley with five assists for the lead.

Furness' first goal came off a corner kick from Grzybowski. Goshen's defense tried to clear it but was too late after Furness knocked the loose ball into the back of the net. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the 20th minute. Fishley made a short pass back to Furness where her chip shot from 20 yards arched over Maple Leaf keeper Molly Zook.

McHale's scoring streak was extended in the 36th minute when headed the ball into the net off a corner kick by Grzybowski.

Goshen's (2-3) kept Davenport's offense quiet for a good portion of the second half. It wasn't until the 78th minute when Leah Hardy turned from the top of the goal box and fired at the goal to give the Panthers a 4-0 lead.

On paper, Davenport continued to be dominant on the attack after outshooting the Maple Leafs 14-4 and taking a 7-3 advantage on corner kick opportunities.

Tara Gessler, making her second straight start between the posts, made four saves including three in the second half to earn her second fully-credited shutout.
