GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –The matchup against NCAA DI Valparaiso did not have any effect on junior
Alyssa Fuentes as she won both of her matches on Saturday afternoon to go over 100 career wins. The two victories were not enough to help the women's tennis team win their duel opener as the Crusaders posted a 6-3 win. Davenport will be in action next Friday when they host Taylor University followed by a match against Lake Superior State on Saturday.
Â
Playing with only five players on Saturday put the Panthers into a 2-0 hole right from the start but head coach
Patrick Grashorn and his team posted three wins in the other seven matches highlighted by two each from
Alyssa Fuentes (6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles) and
Emily Spiech (6-1, 3-6, 7-6 at No. 2 singles).
Â
The duo, which won last week's USTA/ITA Regional doubles title, started the day with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles in which they built a 7-0 lead and finished with the victory on Fuentes' serve.
Â
Other singles matches for DU saw freshman
Bridget Barrett fall 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5,
Montserrat Elizondo fall 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 and
Angelica Woods fall 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3.
Â
DU will have a pair of home duels next weekend when they host Taylor University on Friday and Lake Superior State on Saturday.
