No. 11 Cardinal Stritch Hands Panthers 67-62 Loss

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Panthers began their 2015-16 season Friday night in a tough road match with the No. 11 Cardinal Stritch University Wolves.

The first half saw DU climb out to a 12-9 lead after one quarter. The Wolves would find their offensive stride in the second quarter as they outscored the Panthers 19-8 to take a 28-20 lead to the break. Stritch would hold the Panther offense in check in the first half as DU shot 26.1% from the field. Amanda Merz would led Davenport offensively through 20 minutes as she lead all scorers at the break with seven points.

Stritch then began the second half by extending their lead to 11 points just seven seconds into the second half. They would add to this lead over the Panthers as they extended their lead to 19 points, 43-24, with less than six minutes left in the quarter. The Wolves would manage to maintain this double-digit lead as they carried a 51-36 advantage into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter would see the Panthers battle back to a one possession game with Stritch. Tiesha Stokes led the DU offense as she scored eight points in the second half on her way to a 13-point performance. The Panthers came back to pull within three points at a 65-62 score with 14 seconds remaining after a Stokes layup. DU would foul and force the Wolves to the line in a crucial situation, but Stritch made their free throws in the clutch as they extended their lead to 67-62. The Panthers comeback fell just short as they fell to 0-1 on the season and snapped their 51-game regular season winning streak.

Molly Babbs recorded a double-double as she totaled 10 points and 10 rebounds while Alex Law finished with nine points. The Panthers shot 37.7% from the field and 37.5% from behind the arc. The Stritch defense caused 29 DU turnovers and held the lead over the Panthers for 25:46 of the game.
